Xcel Competitive Program

Xcel at Pegasus

The Xcel program is an excellent entry point into competitive gymnastics, offering athletes a flexible and rewarding way to begin their journey in the sport. Unlike traditional compulsory programs, Xcel allows gymnasts to perform optional routines that are tailored to their individual strengths, creating a more personalized and confidence-building experience.

At Pegasus Gymnastics, Xcel is more than just an introduction to competition — it’s an integral part of our full competitive pathway. Our Xcel athletes build strong foundational skills while progressing toward higher-level gymnastics, making it a great fit for gymnasts who are newer to the sport but eager to challenge themselves, grow, and become part of a motivated, high-energy team.

What is Xcel?

Xcel is an alternative competitive pathway to the Canadian Competitive Program (CCP) Levels 1–9. While CCP Levels 1–5 require athletes to perform set compulsory routines, Xcel focuses on optional routines that allow gymnasts to highlight their strengths and creativity.

At Pegasus, we integrate the Xcel program alongside the CCP pathway as a flexible bridge between levels. This dual approach gives athletes a valuable route for continued growth while maintaining strong technical standards aligned with CCP. Because we use Xcel as a progression tool toward more advanced levels, skill expectations in our program are higher than typical Xcel requirements. Our athletes also train more hours to ensure they are prepared to safely and confidently master their skills.

Xcel Levels Offered at Pegasus:

Training schedules vary from 8 to 20 hours per week depending on age and level. Gymnasts are expected to attend 4–6 competitions each season, with at least 3 taking place before Provincial Championships. Provincials are mandatory for eligible athletes, and Xcel athletes (except Bronze) are also required to participate in Alberta Gymnastics Federation (AGF) training camps.
